The City of Independence is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Full‑Time Patrol Officer. This essential public safety role performs law enforcement duties involving the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and response to emergency situations.
Position Overview
Department: Police
Reports To: Captain and Police Chief
Status: Full‑Time Regular
FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt
Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Patrol Officer performs work of moderate difficulty in law enforcement, maintenance of order, protection of life and property, and crime prevention. The officer responds to emergencies, conducts patrols, enforces traffic laws, writes detailed reports, mediates disputes, apprehends suspects, assists the public, and performs related duties as required.
Essential Job Duties
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education & Experience
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of related work experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Preference for applicants with an Associate’s degree or higher in public administration, criminal justice, or political science.
Licensing, Testing & Certifications
• Valid State of Iowa Driver’s License.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including:
– NIMS certification
– Iowa professional permit to carry weapons
– Annual firearms qualification (handgun & shotgun)
• Post‑offer physical exam.
• Drug testing required.
• MMPI and physical agility testing required.
• Must be bondable.
Physical Requirements
• Frequent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, and carrying.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy weights, including equipment and individuals.
• Strong vision, hearing, and situational awareness.
• Physical agility and the ability to operate equipment and vehicles safely.
Work Environment
• Indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
• Exposure to hazardous situations, high‑risk environments, and emergency operations.
• This position is classified as safety‑sensitive.
Hours of Work
• Typically 40 hours per week.
• On‑call duty required seven days a week.
• Additional hours or schedule changes may occur with minimal notice.
